Dean is long gone but large parts of Jamaica are still without power and running water. People seem to cope well.

After spending three days in the Western part of the island, I was was yesterday deep inside Cocpit Country a tropical forest in the heart of Jamaica. The road to get there was in terrible condition. Once there, I experienced something I had never experienced in my life. All night, they were voices, animal voices. And they were also rasta men spending their day in caves.

I am now back into the civilization, in Ocho Rios where I plan to do one story for my radio series before going to Kingston and Trenchtown, Bob Marley’s historic ghetto.

Jamaica has been an interesting experience so far but you quickly learn that everything is for sale here. For the first time in my professional life, I have had had to deal with people who wanted to sell me their story. I have been to many poor countries around the world but I had never seen that.

Greg Wright facing execution – Greg Wright: bientôt exécuté?

A lot of you have listened to Death Row Radio, my story for Swiss Public Radio about a radio broadcasting on death row in Texas. You have heard my interview with Connie Wright, a woman whose husband Greg is sitting on death row. Greg Wright asked the US Supreme Court to review his case. His petition was denied. It means that this man, who was convicted for a murder he claims he did not commit, will certainly will get a date soon to be executed in Texas. As a man awaits his execution date, another one is about to spend the most exciting day of his young career and will soon know where in the NBA he is going to play next year. Today I met Joakim Noah, the son of tennis legend Yannick Noah. After two college championships with the Florida Gators, Noah is taking part in the NBA draft tomorrow. He will sign his firs contract as a professional, earn millions and . live his American dream. The fascinating thing about the US, is that the nightmare is never far from the dream and you can feel it.

Beaucoup d’entre vous ont écouté “La radio des condamnés à mort”, mon reportage pour la Radio Romande. Il s’agit de cette sation FM qui émet dans les couloirs de la mort au Texas. Vous avez pu entendre mon interview avec Connie Wright, l’épouse de Greg Wright, un condamné à mort. Les avocats de ce dernier ont récemment demandé à la Cour Suprême des Etas-Unis de rouvrir le cas. Cette dernière vient de refuser, estimant que toutes les procédures judiciaires ont été respectées. Cela veut dire que Greg Wright, un homme condamné à mort pour un meurtre qu’il affirme n’avoir pas commis, va bientôt recevoir sa date d’exécution au Texas. Pendant qu’un homme attend son exécution, un autre s’apprête à vivre jeudi le jour le plus beau de sa jeune carrière. Cet homme va savoir dans quel club de NBA il va évoluer l’année prochaine. J’ai rencontré aujourd’hui Joakim Noah, le fils de la légende du tennis Yannick Noah. Après avoir remporté deux titres universitaires avec les Florida Gators, Joakim Noah va participer demain soir au Draft de la NBA. Il va signer son premier contrat de joueur de basket pro, gagner des millions de dollars et vivre son rêve américain. Ce que je trouve fascinant aux Etats-Unis, c’est que le cauchemar n’est jamais très loin du rêve. Et ça se sent ici.

Spirit of Molly – L’esprit de Molly

It was an afternoon in March. Kaye Northcott, Molly Ivins’ old friend, and I were standing in the garden of the house where Molly Ivins had passed away a few weeks earlier. We were looking at her office where she had written so many articles and books to try to change Texas and America. A large dictionary was still opened as if it was waiting for Molly to come back. In that garden, Kaye told me she wished she could keep the house because once the house would be gone it would be “much harder to remember her”. The house has now been sold. But Molly’s dogs has given birth to seven puppies. Life goes on. Look at the picture provided by Kaye. Go and get a book written by Molly Ivins. Or listen to what Kaye Northcott has to say about the two women’s fight for a better America. And enjoy that precious moment.

C’était un après-midi de mars. Kaye Nortcott, une vieille amie de Molly Ivins, et moi étions dans le jardin de la maison où Molly Ivins était décédée quelques semaines plus tôt. Nous regardions par la fenêtre à l’intérieur du bureau où cette journaliste et écrivain avait écrit tant de lettres et d’articles pour tenter de faire avancer le Texas et l’Amérique. Un grand dictionnaire était ouvert et semblait attendre le retour de Molly. Dans ce jardin, Kaye me confiait son espoir de pouvoir garder la maison de son amie parce que sans cette maison aux grandes baies vitrées, il serait beaucoup plus pénible pour elle de se souvenir de Molly. La dernière demeure de la plus grande critique de George Bush a été vendue. Mais la chienne de Molly vient de mettre bas sept chiots. Preuve que la vie continue. Regardez cette photo de Molly. Meet Joe Driver, Texan and Republican – Il s’appelle Joe Driver. Il est Texan et républicain.

He is number one. Joe Driver, the Texas State Representative I met last March for my series of stories for Swiss Public Radio, has the first license to carry a concealed handgun in his State. On December 31 2006, 258 162 Texans had such a license according to statistics from the Texas Department of Public Saftey. Joe Driver sponsored this year the “castle doctrine law”, a law that basically allows you to defend yourself and shoot first if somebody tries breaking into your home, car or place of work. It was recently signed by Texas Governor Rick Perry.

Referring to the Virginia Tech massacre, Joe Driver said in a story published on May 2 in the Austin Statesman that students and faculty members should have the right to protect themselves and bear arms on campuses. On April 16, 32 people were killed by a student. According to the Statesman, Driver suggested that some of the bloodshed at Virginia Tech might have been prevented if a student or professor had had a gun: “Anybody who has a concealed handgun license should be allowed to carry their guns to as many places as possible”, he said.

Having covered the Virginia Tech shooting for Tribune de Genève and 24heures and coming from a European culture, I disagree. But the day I spent with Mr Driver in Austin was very interesting. He has something to say. And even if you disagree, it is definitely worth listening to.

Joe Driver, le Représentant républicain que j’ai rencontré en mars dernier à Austin dans le cadre de ma série de reportages sur le Texas pour la Radio Suisse Romande, possède le premier permis de l’Etat l’autorisant à porter une arme cachée. Au 31 décembre 2006, 268 162 Texans avaient ce même permis selon des statistiques gouvernementales. Joe Driver a fait cette année la promotion de la loi dite de la “doctrine du château” qui permet aux citoyens texans de tirer en premier sur des assaillants s’ils craignent pour leur vie ou la vie de proches. La loi a été signée fin mars par le gouverneur Rick Perry.

Interrogé sur la question du massacre de Virginia Tech, Joe Driver a déclaré le 2 mai dernier au quotidien Austin Statesman que les étudiants et professeurs devraient avoir le droit de porter une arme sur les campus universitaires. Pour rappel, 32 personnes ont été abattues par un étudiant le 16 avril dernier à Virginia Tech. Driver a prétendu que le bain de sang aurait pu être évité si les étudiants avaient eu une arme sur eux.

J’ai couvert cette tuerie et ne suis pas d’accord avec Joe Driver. Cette différence d’opinion résulte aussi de deux cultures très différentes: la texane et l’européenne. Ma journée en compagnie de Joe Driver fut cependant très intéressante. Joe Driver a quelque chose à dire. Et même si vous ne partagez pas son avis, il vaut vraiment la peine d’être écouté.
